Recent Advances in Scanning Microwave Microscopy (SMM) Technique – Friday, June 7th IB 02 11:00

Abstract: In this seminar, I will discuss mainly about the recent advances in scanning microwave microscopy technique for nanoscale characterization of electronic and biological materials using several recent results. The examples to be discussed including the newly developed SMM method called Inverted SMM (iSMM), which is capable of performing non-invasive and label-free imaging and characterization of intracellular structures of a live cell on the nanometer scale. Conveniently, the iSMM can be constructed through straightforward conversion of any scanning probe microscope, such as an atomic force microscope and a scanning tunneling microscope, with a simple metal probe to outperform a traditional SMM. The advantages of this technique will be discussed with the imaging of biological cell structures and 2D electronic materials. Measurements results are accompanied by theoretical models of probe-sample interaction useful for interpretation of experimental results will be discussed. Also I will present our successful implementation of the “Time domain SMM” with measurement results on both biological structures and other materials. More results will be discussed on the advantages of the broad band SMM over the standard narrow band SMM including the implementations of the home made SMM.

About the Speaker:

C.H. Joseph received the BSc degree in physics from St. John’s College, Tirunelveli, India in 2007 and MSc degree in physics from The American College, Madurai, India in 2010. From 2010 to 2013, he worked as a project associate at the Microwave laboratory, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India. In 2013, he received European Commission’s Marie Curie ITN Research Fellowship and joined as an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) at CNR-IMM Rome and received his PhD degree in Electronics Engineering from University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2016. From 2017 to 2018, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India.

            He is currently with the Department of Information Engineering, Università Politecnica delle Marche and working as a post-doctoral researcher. His current research interest includes nanoscale characterization of 2D advanced materials and biological structures using scanning microwave microscopy technique
